Of course, the continuing saga of F:76 doesn't have me optimistic.

The only thing I am hoping for is the negative response to F:76 and even Fallout 4 will cause them to really take stock of their franchises and try to win everyone back. Really a shame because the Elder Scrolls games are still incredibly unique in the open world landscape, they just aren't as unique as they used to be, and I feel like BGS just plans to rest on their laurels. They seem to be moving very slowly toward more action-oriented games that aren't good enough to be judged alongside other action games, while becoming worse and worse RPGs which was the saving grace of their earlier titles.Īnd unlike a studio like Obsidian, who honestly seem to have taken their track record for buggy games to heart and have had relatively bug-free releases for their past two major games (comparatively speaking) BGS just seems to dig deeper and deeper into the hole with every new game they put out. So then you add in the bugs and it's just hard to get excited for Bethesda stuff. If the writing was on par with Bethesda's earlier works, and the RPG systems had been intact, I think everyone agrees you'd have a great game. Thing is, even Bethesda's best playing game, Fallout 4, doesn't have such great gameplay that it can beat out the competition. Putting aside F:76 as I haven't played it, each new Bethesda game has had worse overall writing but better gameplay. On the flipside, the gameplay of Bethesda games has had an inverse curve. Now, to be fair, the Elder Scrolls and new Fallout games still offer an open world experience that is pretty unique, but the idea of being able to go anywhere and do anything is not enough of a selling point when pretty much every game is giving you some kind of open world playground.Īt the same time, I think it's undeniable that the quality of writing has just gone down hill, pretty linearly from game to game. Just having an open world game was enough to move copies, because it was a feature on its own. When Morrowind and even Oblivion came out, open world games were still a novelty.
